MANAGING CONFLICT IN A
GROUP
(A) DO NOTHING

In this example, Grace may decide not to engage directly with any of her group mates or anyone else involved in the conflict. She may decide to avoid the conflict altogether or give in to the group and go along with whatever happens.

We know Grace is feeling really stressed out about the whole thing. Avoiding or going along with what the group wants may be a good option if she thinks that:

  • It will reduce her stress levels
  • The conflict will only be short lived (e.g. the group work will finish soon and she won’t have to deal with it any more)
  • The conflict is unlikely to get worse

However, avoiding or giving in to the group may be a bad response if she thinks that:

  • It could significally affect whats really important to her (e.g. getting a good grade)
  • She will end up sacrificing something she really wants
  • She will end up feeling resentful in the future
